Los Angeles Lakers - From the Down Times until Now

By Matt Ryan

You do not have to follow basketball to know who the Los Angeles Lakers are. The Lakers are one of the most well known teams on the NBA. They do hold a number of records, but throughout their history, there have been a number of bad years. Through good team selection and coaches, the team has fought to get themselves to where they are today.

In the beginning, the Lakers faced a number of difficulties - they won some and they lost some. There were no championship titles or records won by the team - not in the early days.

Detroit, Michigan was the Lakers' home state, in 1946. Their next home city was in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After their move to Minnesota, things started to look up, as they won five championships.

In 1960 is when the officially became known as the Los Angeles Lakers, after their move to the west coast. Their first ten years, in LA, did not appear to promising. They could not even win enough games to get into the NBA finals.

In the 1970's, things did not look much better for the Lakers. They did win a title, but other than that, nothing big happened.

The following ten years was when the Los Angeles Lakers began to shine through. Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were both playing for the Lakers, during the 1980's. The Lakers not only had two well known players on their team, but they also had a coach - Pat Riley - who led them to five more championship wins. Within this ten-year span, they successfully hit record high wins in one season.

After a phenomenal turn of events, the 1990's looked dim for the Lakers. At this point, they were still a better team than they were back in the old days, but the number of titles and wins were nothing to brag about.

The 21st century was where it all began for the Lakers. Well-known players, like Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant, played for the Lakers this year. A Hall of Fame coach by the name of Phil Jackson is coaching them through each season. Whatever they are doing, they are doing it right as they have already won five NBA finals, this century.

Fans, from all over, are beginning to follow the Lakers, as they are beginning to see what a strong team they really are. These fans, like many sports fans, will do just about anything to get into a game, let alone get great seats.

By the end of the playing season of 2008, the Los Angeles Lakers held a number of remarkable records. Their total wins are just over 2,900, giving them the record for the highest number of games won by one NBA team.

They also hold records for the highest percentage (60%) of won games and appearing in the Finals 29 times. One fete, for them personally, to beat is the number of championship wins held by their rivals - the Boston Celtics. The Lakers are only three championship wins away, but this would be a grand accomplishment for the team.

Talent has been the #1 success story behind the Lakers. Fourteen Hall of Fame members have - at some point in time - played on the LA Lakers. Additionally four Hall of Fame coaches have coached them through many victories. - 16955
