Saltwater Fishing Gear: Starting Out

By Bob Smith

The fish are different in the ocean than in the lake or stream. I know that sounds silly, but it's amazing to me how many people want to avoid the cost of saltwater fishing gear. If you just want to try the sport, then borrow or rent the right gear.

When you go saltwater fishing you need not only skill but the knowledge and use of the proper equipment. If you're a freshwater fisherman , though the skills are similar the equipment differences mean you'll need some adjustment time to learn the in's and out's of the saltwater fishing gear.

Starting with the basics, you want a good rod. You want one in the middle, not the most expensive and not dirt cheap. The rod will set you back from $100 -200+. The least expensive rod is a mistake from the get go. You'll probably pick up some bad habits and no one will want it for resale when you're ready to move up to the next level.

Next on your list is a good saltwater fishing reel. Salt water is highly corrosive eating at the metal in metal reels. Invest the money in reel with is saltwater corrosion resistant. My choice is graphite and aluminum.

There are two types of reels available: baitcasting and spinning. Baitcasting is better for bigger fish but requires more skill to use. Spinning reels have a stationary spool making them easier to handle. Choose the line to fit your reel and the type of fishing you intend to do. If youre just getting started then consider a combo, as the manufacturer marries the right reel with the right rod.

I'll take some heat on this one, but it's your decision to make your own fly or buy at a local tackle shop. Just choose or make the correct one for the fish you intend to catch. Don't skimp on quality. Fish aren't stupid and won't go for low quality fly.

If you're an experienced freshwater fisherman, you adapt quickly to saltwater fishing with the correct saltwater fishing gear. With the proper gear youll enjoy your fishing as you expand your skills to the saltwater. Saltwater fishing gear properly cared for will provide many years of enjoyable fishing. - 16955
